JAMIE ABOUT TOWN (April)

Happy spring everyone!  Hopefully you all read the initial blog last week, which I’m calling the origin story, and know what the vibe is here.  If not, head on back and see where we’re going on this journey.  Spot #1 for my tour around town is one of those tucked away spots that’s not even a restaurant or a bar, but a place everyone needs to know about, the La Merced Super Mercado here in South St. Paul.

A small unassuming Mexican grocery store located in a strip mall off 5th Ave South is a great spot to pick up any Latin inspired snacks, spices, and produce that you may not find at your main grocer.  But what I’d like to focus on is what they do on the weekends, which is make fresh menudo, barbacoa, carnitas, among other goodies.  Our favorite though are hands down some of the best tamales you will ever taste!

I’ve eaten my share of Mexican food over the years, and even more so since I married a strong Mexican woman that knows how to cook!  I love a good taco and enchilada, but personally I’ve never been much of a fan of tamales.  For me the ratio of masa was always too high with just a small amount of meat stuffed in the middle.  And in most tamale’s I’ve had, the masa is extremely bland with zero flavor, which can also come off as dry.  They fix those problems here with having the ratio of meat to masa a lot closer, and giving a ton of flavor to that masa!  The pork ones for instance, they add the ancho chilies which soaks through the entire tamale to give it a massive flavor bomb, and a bit of that extra kick if that’s your thing.

Again this is weekends only, and sold in packs of 6 for only $10, and when they’re gone that’s it.  Try again next week!  We get there pretty early on Saturday mornings when we want to nab a couple packs, and those typically become breakfast, lunch, & dinner for the night!

You won’t find much info on this place on the web or Facebook, so trust me, just go.  1533 5th Ave S in South St. Paul.  Again best tamale’s you will ever have.  I dare you to change my mind.

Don’t believe me, just ask my wife….

(Simone says)...My husband is right, this mercado is a great spot for picking up what you need for your Latino inspired dishes. The weekend food options are fantastic and a great grab and go for a family meal. Who wants to cook on the weekend anyway? Use your time off to play and leave the cooking to La Merced. Enjoy!
